If you have diabetes and you are a smoker, you are adding insult to injury by continuing to light up. Smoking inflicts further damage to your body's already poor insulin response. The chief culprit in insulin resistance appears to be the nicotine in tobacco. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known more help. It is EXTREMELY difficult to stop smoking, as the withdrawal symptoms are not easy for you (or those around you) to deal with - irritability, restlessness, mood changes, headaches, generally feeling 'out-of-sorts'... BUT the rewards are worth it!

Despite the fact that smoking causes cancer, problems faced by diabetics (such as heart and blood vessel disease) are aggravated by nicotine.

  • Diabetic smokers are more likely to suffer nerve damage and kidney disease
  • Diabetic smokers are three times more likely to die of heart disease than non-smoking diabetics
  • Smoking raises your blood sugar levels, making it harder to control your condition
  • Smoking cuts off the amount of oxygen reaching tissues
  • Smoking damages blood vessels which could lead to more serious leg and foot infections and blood vessel disease
  • Smoking increases your blood pressure and cholesterol levels

You may have to see your doctor within a few months of giving up smoking, as your condition may have improved to the point where your medication might have to be changed. High blood pressure and cholesterol medication may also need adjusting.
